Gender Identity Therapy
Our Approach
We provide gender-affirming therapy for those who feel this is an important piece of their identity, or who may be seeking guidance for a friend or family member questioning their gender identity. EK Counseling has over eight years of experience working with trans* and gender expansive clients through individual, couples, families, and group therapy modalities.
We can assist with the following:
-
Understanding your gender identity and creating a solid foundation from which to move forward with next steps
-
Clarifying the confusion and frustration with if and how to move forward
-
Coming out to partners, friends, parents and work
-
Dealing with gender dysphoria
-
Locating resources in the community for transition related changes (hormone therapy, hair removal, clothing, support groups/community, voice lessons, and surgery)
-
Meeting with partners or parents of those identifying as trans*/gender expansive/non-binary to provide a safe and supportive space to explore reactions
-
Relationship or work struggles related to gender identity
-
Letters for top surgery, sex reassignment surgery, and HRT
Letters for Surgery and HRT (hormone replacement therapy)
We provide letters for those who need them for top surgery, sex reassignment surgeries, and hormone replacement therapy. Many endocrinologists in the Denver/Boulder area are now operating on an informed consent model for HRT, and thus this type of letter may not be necessary. We require two to three visits with each client who seeks out a secondary letter for surgery. This allows for a complete a thorough evaluation to determine readiness for surgery.
We follow the WPATH (World Professional Association of Transgender Health) guidelines for mental health professionals, which are outlined in the most current Standards of Care. We do not believe that medical intervention is a necessary process for every transition, and will explore and evaluate these options with each client to determine what feels most authentic to each individual.
We as a society now understand gender identity to be far more complex than previously thought. Finding a gender therapist who is affirming and comprehends the complexities of gender identity is essential.
